EARLY DETECTION SYMPTOMS

The symptoms are not always the same. The warning signs of dual diagnosis/Co-Occurring Disease vary. Since there are many different types of drugs and mental disorders, there is not one definitive list, though there are some common problems people with dual diagnosis may share. Below, you’ll find a small list of possible warning signs:

Exhibiting signs of anxiety, depression, or bipolar disorder (severe high and low mood swings)

Compulsive behaviors such as cutting, binging and purging with food, binge drinking

Alienating loved ones and friends

Inability to control their alcohol or recreational drug use

Panic attacks or severe anxiety

A family history of substance abuse or mental illness

Sexual or other abuse as a child

Lingering stress after trauma

There are periods of extreme emotional highs and then extreme depression.

Frequent episodes of depression

Erratic behavior, irritability, insomnia, general inappropriate behavior

Isolation and secrecy relating to their personal life

Unwilling to discuss any personal issues noticed by loved ones
